MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR—Benjamin Scott, Steilacoom High School

It’s always a temptation, to call anyone named Scott … “Great”Scott!

We’re not going to need to consider that this time around because Benjamin Scott of Steilacoom high school has greatness written all over him. In every way, he’s an All-American!

Ben has a perfect 4.0 gpa, is Steilacoom’s graduation speaker of choice (by his fellow students), and is an Academic All-America in the classroom.

What kind of an athlete is he? Listen to this parade of honors and achievements and you can answer that yourself. In swimming Ben won two individual state championships this year and was a key performer in the 200 medley relay for another state title. He qualified for All-America consideration with times of 50.34 in the 100 butterfly and 51.19 in the 100 backstroke. He also set the state meet record in that event.

Last year he won two state titles in the 100 freestyle (48.25) and 100 backstroke (51.46), setting a state record in the “back” and gaining All-America consideration as well. After breaking 6 school records and tying another in 2013, he broke 5 more in 2014.

And listen to this: Ben qualified for the state meet in every individual event except breaststroke and diving. At the district championships he qualified in every event but diving. He was district champion in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Going up a notch he was 2A and 3A champion in the 100 butterfly and 100 back (he had won the 100 free and the 100 back there the year before).

To top it off, Scott was named “Swimmer of the Meet” at the 2014 Boys’ State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Team captain and team MVP at Steilacoom, Ben was a Scholastic All-American in both 2012 and 2013 and has been a National Honor Society member since 2011. If he needed musical accompaniment , it would be no problem. He’s been in his high school band since 2010 (piano and percussion).

Off campus he is a member of the Tacoma Swim Club and the Pacific Northwest Swim Team which competed in the 2010 North American Challenge Cup in Santa Clara and the 2011 Cup in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Next year he’ll be a freshman at the University of Utah.

There’s much more, but that’s good. No …“Great” already applies!
