The Tacoma Athletic Commission is a sports-minded civic organization which raises funds, stages events, and recognizes the athletic achievements of fellow citizens in Pierce County. It is dedicated to youth and sports.
Events staged by the TAC include recognition ceremonies for local high school and college athletes (the Banquet of Champions and the Athlete of the Year Awards), the Golden Gloves boxing championships
(now in their 68th year - 2nd oldest in the United States) and the TAC Celebrity Golf Classic.
The TAC also supports the events staged in greater Tacoma by other organizations; the various Washington Interscholastic Activities state championships, local and regional competitions hosted by Metro Parks, Pierce County Parks, high schools, colleges, sports clubs and teams, and sports gatherings attracted to our communities by Tacoma South Sound Sports.
What are the TAC’s most meaningful contributions to youth and sports? The Tacoma Dome stands tall among its efforts, since the TAC raised the funds and directed the campaign to convince Tacoma voters to say YES to a “Dome of our Own” in 1980. In 2015 sports competition was renewed in Tacoma’s middle schools resulting in 99 varsity teams for boys and girls, thanks to a grant secured by the TAC from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation.
The Tacoma Pierce County Sports Museum, the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame, the
Tacoma-Pierce County Softball-Baseball Old Timers and the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame all trace their roots to the TAC.
Perhaps the most popular of many TAC programs is the Athlete of the Year awards in 23 sports at 34 high schools with Columbia Bank as its sponsor. More than 700 student-athletes, families and friends gather quarterly to celebrate the academic and athletic achievements of those who are recognized .
If it’s sports, and particularly if our youth is involved, look for the TAC to be active in support with volunteers, financial assistance, publicity and plenty of encouragement and enthusiasm.
