April 9th, 2026 Lunch Meeting - Mark Hendrickson
Join us on April 9th for the Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission's monthly meeting! Our guest speaker will be Mark Hendrickson. Mark Hendrickson is one of only 13 athletes ever to play in both the NBA and Major League Baseball. He is the only one to do it in the past 40 years and the only one to play at least four seasons in each league. A 6-foot-9 forward on the basketball court and a left-handed pitcher in baseball, Hendrickson exhibited two-sport stardom back to his high school days when he led Mount Vernon to two state basketball championships (1991, 1992) and two state baseball championships (1990, 1992). He was a 13th-round baseball draft pick in 1992 but headed to Washington State University focused on basketball. He was a two-time, first-team all-Pac-10 selection. When he concluded his WSU basketball career in 1996, he was second for career rebounds (927) and third for points (1,496). He was the 31st overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played 114 NBA games with four teams. He had pitched eight games at WSU as a junior, and MLB scouts kept drafting him. He signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, playing some minor league ball while still in the NBA. In 2002, he made his Major League debut. He was a full-time starting pitcher for three seasons with Toronto and Tampa Bay. He continued for 10 seasons in the majors, winning 58 games. He also hit the first home run by a pitcher in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays. Social hour will be from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the meeting from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM at Cheney Stadium.

What is the Youth Sports Fund?

What is the Youth Sports Fund?

The Youth Sports Fund is a new program for the Tacoma Athletic Commission (TAC) that provides assistance to programs or individuals in need of support. With the leadership of the Executive Board and a Youth Sport Committee, we receive requests from all Pierce County Schools and individual students’ requests. We review all requests and make decisions on which ones we will support.  The funds that support this program come from our annual golf, betting pools from the Apple Bowl, Super Bowl, March Madness, and individual donors.

With recent gifts, we funded a young lady who desperately needed a pair of new basketball shoes because she would have probably hurt herself playing in the old pair. It was fun to watch this young person receive new shoes with a smile and be more confident playing in her new shoes. Another gift went to a 13-year-old girl who has always had an interest in golf, but with Youth Sports funds, we were able to purchase her golf lessons. This recipient currently lives with her grandparents, and they are overjoyed to see their granddaughter fulfilling her dream.

This year, the TAC received a large gift from the Cheney Foundation, and the Executive Board agreed to use some of those funds in the Youth Sports Fund. So, we funded several Middle and Senior high schools with new uniforms. This isn’t the largest fund, but if you know of any youth in need of support, please contact Phil Carter.

WIAA 2025-2026 Week 25 - Adrian Windsor
Sophomore Adrian Windsor captured his second State Championship, claiming the 120-pound title to solidify his place among the state’s elite wrestlers. With two titles already in his career, Windsor continues to establish himself as one of the top competitors in his classification.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 25 - Kyler Menza
Senior Kyler Menza captured the 2A Girls 105-pound 2026 State Championship, avenging a loss in the state finals the previous year to a nationally ranked opponent. With the victory, Menza became the first four-time state placer and first three-time state finalist in school history, while also earning her place as the fourth two-time state champion in program history.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 24 - Jack Andrew
Senior Jack Andrew has built an exceptional career at Stadium High School, excelling both in the pool and in the classroom. A two-time USA Swimming All-American (2024 & 2025) and USA Swimming Junior National qualifier, Andrew is a four-year state qualifier, two-year team captain, and the school record holder in the 200 freestyle. He has reached the WIAA State Championship finals in each of the past three seasons, earning five podium finishes, including runner-up and third-place finishes in multiple events. At the 2026 district meet, Andrew captured titles in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, earned High Point Swimmer honors with 130 points, and anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a silver medal.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 24 - Remy Berg
Junior Remy Berg has led Fife to an undefeated league season as the Trojans’ top scorer, capping the regular season with a dominant 32-point performance against the second-place team. She added 10 steals and 5 assists in the statement win and tied the school record with eight three-pointers in a single game. Berg’s scoring ability, defensive intensity, and playmaking have been central to Fife’s championship-caliber run.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 23 - Michael Fritz
Senior Michael “Mikey” Fritz is a two-time Washington State Champion and is pursuing his third state title this season at 165 pounds. A state champion at 113 pounds as a freshman and 144 pounds as a junior, with a third-place finish as a sophomore, Fritz has built one of the most accomplished careers in Orting history. A four-time SPSL Scholar Athlete and team captain, he balances elite performance on the mat with excellence in the classroom and leadership roles in NHS, ASB, art/pottery, and the weightlifting club.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 23 - Jordyn Daigle
Senior Jordyn Daigle has emerged as one of the state’s top flag football players in her school’s inaugural season, leading White River from program launch to the 3A State semifinals. Despite never having played the sport before, Daigle has totaled 113 offensive touches, 20 touchdown receptions, 3 rushing touchdowns, 57.5 tackles, and 9 interceptions, including three returned for scores, averaging 1.5 touchdowns per game and 26 total touchdowns.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 21 - Kolten McGuire
Kolten McGuire, a junior wrestling at 113 lbs for the Bison, reached a major milestone this month with his 100th career varsity victory. He’s compiled 19 individual wins in January alone, including a perfect 6-0 performance at the Prairie Duals, where he defeated a state-ranked opponent. Kolten’s consistency and high-level competition make him a standout leader for Bethel Wrestling.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 21 - Kaivone Cooks

Kaivone Cooks, a senior at Lincoln, capped off a remarkable achievement by pinning his opponent in just 1:36 during his PCL crossover match vs. Peninsula, completing four consecutive years undefeated in league dual varsity matches. He also recently claimed 1st place at 190 pounds in the Willie Stewart Tournament at Foss High School. Kaivone’s dominance on the mat and consistency throughout his high school career make him a standout and a deserving WIAA Athlete of the Week nominee.

WIAA 2025-2026 Week 20 - Laney Weaver
Laney Weaver, a junior at Puyallup, delivered a clutch week for the Vikings. Against Spanaway Lake (then first place in the SPSL South), she led the team with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and 7-for-10 from the field. In her second game, facing the new first-place team, Laney tied a school record with seven made three-pointers, finishing with 31 points, including 18 in a furious second-half rally that brought the Vikings back from 22 down. She added 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals, stepping up big in a critical moment.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 20 - Andralynne Harless
Senior Andralynne Harless powered Clover Park to a perfect 2–0 week, showcasing her dominance on both ends of the court. She averaged 16 points, 16 rebounds, 4 steals, and 1 block per game, setting the tone defensively and on the glass. In a standout performance against Eatonville, Harless recorded 20 points, 5 steals, and a career-high 23 rebounds, leading her team to a key league win and demonstrating her value as a relentless force in the paint.
WIAA 2025-2026 Week 19 - Caroline Deyoung
At just the second gymnastics meet of the season, senior Caroline DeYoung delivered a standout all-around performance. She placed 1st on bars (8.9) and floor (9.4), 2nd on vault (8.8) and beam (9.0), and earned 1st place All-Around with a score of 36.10, a significant improvement from her 34.40 total in the season opener. Her early-season consistency and growth make her a top competitor to watch this year.
