Patience Brown
Puyallup High School / University of Oregon
2025
Cheer

The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission proudly recognizes Patience Brown, a senior at Puyallup High School, as the 2025 recipient of the Clay Huntington Scholarship. This distinguished scholarship, named after one of Tacoma’s most influential sportscasters, writers, and civic leaders, honors students who demonstrate excellence, purpose, and a commitment to storytelling that uplifts and informs their communities. Patience embodies all of this and more.

Patience has worn many hats throughout her high school career—cheer captain, yearbook editor, and student government treasurer—but it is her voice and vision that have truly set her apart. Growing up in Puyallup, often as one of the only Black students in the room, Patience developed a deep understanding of the power of representation. Rather than shrink from those experiences, she embraced them as fuel for her passion: to become a journalist and media professional who gives voice to the unheard and shines light on truth.

Patience will attend the University of Oregon this fall, where she plans to major in journalism and communications. Her ultimate goal is to use media as a tool for social awareness, equity, and positive change. She hopes to inspire younger generations—especially girls of color—to see that their stories matter, their presence matters, and their perspectives belong in every space. Whether through investigative journalism, community reporting, or broadcast storytelling, Patience is committed to creating content that challenges injustice, sparks conversation, and celebrates authenticity.

Outside the classroom, Patience has also shown a remarkable dedication to her community. Through her work with Sow Therapeutic’s garden initiative, she spent time planting, harvesting, and distributing fresh vegetables to local families in need. This hands-on work gave her a new perspective on food insecurity and community connection. One mother told her the fresh produce helped her provide healthier meals for her children—an interaction that left a lasting impression on Patience. She speaks passionately about the joy and fulfillment she felt knowing their efforts helped nourish not just bodies, but hope.

Despite the challenges she’s faced, Patience has remained steadfast in her pursuit of creating space for others, and in becoming the kind of journalist who speaks truth with integrity and courage. Her clarity of purpose, combined with her leadership and service, make her a powerful and promising voice for the future.

The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is honored to support Patience’s journey through the Clay Huntington Scholarship and looks forward to the impact she will continue to make—in journalism, in her community, and beyond.
