John Browand, Peninsula High School

The Tacoma‑Pierce Athletic Commission is proud to recognize John Browand of Peninsula High School as the recipient of the 2026 Clay Huntington Sports Communication Award, honoring a student whose storytelling, integrity, and commitment to community reflect the enduring legacy of Clay Huntington.

John’s passion for sports communication is rooted in real experience and meaningful impact. Since May 2024, he has worked as a student journalist for the Key Peninsula News, a hyperlocal nonprofit newspaper serving the Key Peninsula community. In that role, John has written published columns in his sports-focused series “Off the Mound,” contributed feature stories—including coverage of the Peninsula High School marching band—and captured sports photography highlighting student-athletes and school programs.

What distinguishes John’s work is his understanding that sports journalism is about more than reporting scores. Writing for a community-based publication, he learned early that his audience included classmates, teachers, families, and neighbors—people who trusted him to tell their stories accurately and respectfully. John approached each assignment with care, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility to the community he served.

John’s appreciation for the power of sports storytelling is also deeply personal. As a student-athlete himself, he experienced firsthand what it means to have hard work and success recognized through local media coverage. He describes how seeing his own performances documented and shared strengthened his connection to teammates, family members, and community members who could not attend games in person. That experience helped shape his desire to use sports communication to uplift others and ensure that student-athletes feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
Through his work with the Key Peninsula News, John has developed essential journalistic skills—meeting deadlines, verifying facts, listening carefully, and understanding why stories matter. Editors entrusted him with the freedom to develop his voice while holding him to professional standards of accuracy and accountability. His writing and photography reflect an authentic voice, strong storytelling instincts, and a clear commitment to community-centered journalism.

Selected by the Athlete of the Year Committee, John Browand exemplifies the purpose of the Clay Huntington Sports Communication Award. His dedication to thoughtful storytelling, real-world journalism experience, and respect for the communities he represents reflect the values Clay Huntington championed throughout his career. This fall, John plans to attend Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow School of Communication, where he will continue developing his skills and pursuing a future in sports communication. The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is honored to recognize John’s achievements and support his continued growth in the field.
