The Tacoma Athletic Commission, serving all high schools In Tacoma and Pierce County, is honored to award the 2022–2023 Stan Naccarato sports and Civic Betterment Award to Lauren Scheid-Padron. The 2023 recipient of the Stan Naccarato Scholarship embraces all of the qualities Stan envisioned in making Tacoma a better community. Tacoma Deputy Mayor wrote, “Lauren’s resume would be impressive for anyone and is especially so for a youth who is still just beginning her journey! Her passion is environmental stewardship, and I have worked side-by-side with her in her efforts to clean up litter in her neighborhood and restore natural habitats. Lauren rolls up her sleeves when she sees a need not being met. She is a founding member of multiple organizations and collaborated with her peers to make change happen. The impact of her efforts has been recognized repeatedly, including by the Governor when she received a Washington State Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The City of Tacoma will recognize her this year with a City of Destiny Award for Environmental Sustainability.” In her essay, Lauren stated. “I’ve organized numerous clean-ups in my area over the past few years outside of the high school setting while also establishing connections with the Puyallup Tribe, Metro Parks, Litter Free 253, Adopt-A-Spot Program, Jobs253, Chip-in Program, and my local community. In 2020, I committed my time to mowing the lawns of elders, veterans, people with disabilities, and single parents during the pandemic for free. I recognized this, especially in light of the general decline in mental health and isolation, so I reasoned that it would be best to start by improving my neighborhood in small ways. I’ve learned from this project that little things matter, and you never know what someone is going through. Over that span, I mowed over 100 lawns.” This year’s recipient will attend Eastern Washington University. In high school, she played varsity volleyball, and flag football, was a member of the Native and Key Clubs, and was the founder member and President of the Sunshine Committee. Lauren Scheidt-Padron built a community at Lincoln High School. She has made a difference; the school and the communities she serves are better places because of her. It Is an honor for the Tacoma Athletic Commission to recognize Lauren Scheidt-Padron of Lincoln High School with the Stan Naccarato Sports and Civic Betterment Award for the 2022–2023 school year.
