Track and Field / Flag Football

The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is honored to present the 2025 Tom Names Female Inspirational Award to Azariah Miller, a senior at Curtis Senior High School whose strength, leadership, and service embody the spirit of this award. Named after the late philanthropist and champion of youth athletics Tom Names, this honor recognizes student-athletes who rise above adversity, inspire their communities, and lead with compassion and courage.

Azariah is an accomplished athlete and a quiet force of resilience. A standout on the Track & Field team and a proud member of her school’s inaugural flag football team, she has earned recognition not just for her athletic ability, but for the character she brings to every competition. As a team captain, Azariah helped lead Curtis to a State Championship in Track & Field, contributing critical performances at the highest level of competition. Her excellence extends beyond the school year—she is also a dedicated club track athlete who has competed at national championships, representing her school and community with pride.

But it’s Azariah’s influence off the field that makes her truly exceptional. As a Teaching Assistant in Special Needs PE, a track coach for junior high students, and a volunteer with inclusive athletics programs, she has poured herself into helping others thrive—especially those with physical or developmental challenges. Her dream is to become a speech pathologist, using her future career to help individuals with disabilities or communication barriers express themselves fully and confidently. She will begin that journey this fall at Central Washington University, majoring in communication sciences and disorders with a minor in education.

Azariah’s path has not been without difficulty. She has faced the sting of discrimination and the weight of being underestimated. But instead of becoming discouraged, she used those experiences to fuel her desire to make the world better—for herself and for others who might feel overlooked. Her commitment to dignity, service, and personal growth shines in every aspect of her life. “Through the help and guidance of God and my determination,” she writes, “I will use my experiences to help others and make our community a safer and more compassionate place.”

Those who know Azariah describe her as enthusiastic, humble, and deeply driven. Whether mentoring younger athletes, lifting up her teammates, or showing patience and care in the classroom, Azariah brings light to every space she enters. Her ability to inspire, encourage, and lead—especially when no one is watching—is what makes her so deserving of this award.

The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is proud to honor Azariah Miller with the Tom Names Female Inspirational Award. Her story is one of perseverance, purpose, and heart—and it’s only just beginning.
