The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission proudly recognizes Reese Bywater, a senior at Sumner High School, as the 2025 recipient of the Tom Names Male Inspirational Award. Named in honor of community leader and philanthropist Tom Names, this award celebrates student-athletes who lead with heart, uplift others, and exemplify the power of service and sportsmanship—qualities that Reese lives every day.
Ranked #1 in his graduating class of 456, Reese pairs academic excellence with remarkable leadership and compassion. On the soccer field, he is a standout varsity athlete and team leader who helped guide his team to an SPSL 4A District Championship and back-to-back State Tournament appearances. As a five-year team captain for Washington Premier Football Club, Reese earned All-Conference and All-Regional honors while mentoring teammates and representing his club at national championship qualifiers. His performance is matched by his integrity—earning “Man of the Match” honors multiple times and always bringing humility and sportsmanship to the game.
Beyond athletics, Reese’s impact is profound. He is an active member of National Honor Society, a volunteer for the Sumner Food Bank, and a Junior Health Scholar through the COPE Health program—gaining hands-on healthcare experience in a hospital setting. His dedication to serving others shines in every role, from organizing food drives to supporting youth with disabilities through Seattle Parks & Recreation and coaching inclusive sports programs.
One of Reese’s greatest strengths is his quiet, steady leadership. Whether supporting a camper with special needs at the YMCA or mentoring teammates on and off the field, he makes others feel seen, valued, and empowered. “Sports communication,” he reflects, “is not just words—it’s connection, care, and trust.” Though he does not plan to pursue a traditional path in sports media, he will carry these principles into his future as a doctor, with plans to study medicine and communication at the college level and one day serve the very community that shaped him.
Reese’s character has earned him numerous honors, including the Bill and Laura Stoner Endowment Scholarship, selection as a Most Valuable Student Quarterfinalist by the Elks National Foundation, and recognition as an Outstanding Junior by the Sumner Masonic Lodge. Yet it’s his genuine humility, thoughtfulness, and purpose-driven mindset that make him a role model.
The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is proud to present the Tom Names Inspirational Award to Reese Bywater, a scholar-athlete whose leadership, resilience, and service truly reflect the legacy of Tom Names and the spirit of this award.
