While many professional athletes find homes in the sports journalism world after their playing days end, James Silberman has found success both on the court and in the booth while still attending high school.
Silberman, a Peninsula High School student, is a three-year varsity letter winner in basketball and a fouryear varsity letter winner in tennis. On the tennis court he has served two years as a team captain and twice earned all-league honors.
But as successful as his athletic career has been, it is possible that Silberman’s greatest achievements have come as a reporter. His sportscast won first place at the Washington High School Broadcast Convention, and his high school paper – the Peninsula Outlook – won “Best in Show” at the National Journalism Convention three years ago and placed ninth at the convention this past year.
Silberman interned in the Pacific Lutheran University athletics office last summer, and his work ethic and professionalism prompted longtime PLU sports information director Nick Dawson to increase his responsibilities.
Silberman capped the summer internship by profiling PLU pitcher Max Beatty for a story about Beatty’s battle against cancer.
Silberman is set to graduate from Peninsula high as a member of the Class of 2014 with a 3.63. GPA. He plans to continue his athletics and journalism careers on the other side of the state at Whitworth University.
