In Joe Lyon’s own words, “All my life I have had a calling to sports and I love them. I enjoy playing and watching. I never get tired of the joy they bring me. Someday I would like to be a broadcaster for ESPN.”
Well, someday he might! One of his main college selections is the University of Southern California which is just minutes from the L.A. headquarters of ESPN. Has Joe prepared well for his college hopes while he has attended Bellarmine? A 3.98 GPA is quite a start. Nothing but an A or an A-. So is being one of the top performers in Varsity Golf on a state championship team, playing VarsityTennis where he was team captain, playing Freshman basketball where he was named “Mr. Hustle." So is being On Line Editor of the Bellarmine Lion. So is being a Scholar Athlete and a member of the National Honor Society. So is covering the U.S. Open golf tournament at Chambers Bay during the Summer and being asked to learn Bellarmine’s complex InDesign layout in his junior year. Normally it is an opportunity reserved for seniors. So is a non-profit limited liability company Joe started a few years ago, Lyon Food LLC. The result? Joe’s Jam. Each jar of jam costs $5 and Joe contributes $2 from each sale to the American Lake Veterans Golf Course. To date he has donated over $3,000 to that worthy organization. Joe’s Journalism Advisor praises Joe for his dedication and determination and his wonderful work in his classroom. His reminder of Joe? Every morning he looks at Joe’s smiling face on the label of Joe’s Jam which he enjoys with his toast. What does Joe do with his spare time? He is an Alter Server every Sunday at church, delivers food baskets on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and serves as a batboy for the Tacoma Rainiers.
Bellarmine's James Dempsey, who teaches World History and Advanced Placement United States History, offers this statement about Joe as a student: He will add very positively to any college campus.
