When he was in high school in Tacoma, sports were number one with Clay Huntington and the same seems to be true for Josh Hanigan of Bellarmine who is receiving a $2,500 college scholarship in Clay’s name. Josh is headed for Linfield College to study business and Sports Management.
As Sports Editor of the student newspaper and a member of the Lion’s Broadcast Team Josh certainly has prepared himself to pursue his interests and goals. Sports have been a big part of his life at Bellarmine and it is hard to imagine how much he has done
in the various “arenas” there.
He has twice been the Offensive Lineman of the Year in football (received the Coach’s Award as a Freshman) and was an all-league and all area selection while serving as Bellarmine’s team captain. He threw the Discus in Track & Field and he bowled on the Lions State team but that’s not all. He played both baseball and basketball. When he wasn’t playing he scouted for the Bellarmine girls basketball team.
Off the field and the gym and the
alley he was a Senior Team Leader in Bellarmine Prep Campus Ministry, a member of the school’s Chess Club and a member of the Future Leaders of America.
In the community Josh found the time to pack bags of toiletries for distribution and to distribute snacks to people who lived on the streets in Tacoma. He also gathered cleats for junior football teams and replaced worn out cleats at Boys & Girls Clubs. Each September since 2013 he has helped with the Light the Night Sock Drive, donating colorful socks to foster kids in memory of a team-mate’s Mother who passed away at age 46.
Helping coach youth teams in football at the Run To Win Christian Camp and for the Lion Youth Football Club plus two-years as the Tacoma Rainiers Bat Boy at Cheney Stadium also kept him active (and then some!)
Did he ever study? His 3.68 GPA at Bellarmine says YES. Clay Huntington would be so proud of him.
