The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is proud to present the 2025 Sis Names Award to Avery Cukjati of Curtis High School, in recognition of her extraordinary impact as a student-athlete, teammate, and leader in her school community. Named in honor of Sis Names—who championed excellence in girls' athletics and community involvement—this award celebrates young women whose strength, sportsmanship, and heart lift everyone around them. Avery embodies this legacy in every way.

A four-year varsity athlete and two-year team captain, Avery has been the driving force behind Curtis High School’s volleyball program. As a six-rotation player and this year’s SPSL 4A Offensive MVP, Avery led her team in kills and helped propel Curtis to an unforgettable season—winning the league title, the West Central District tournament, and earning the #1 seed in the WIAA State Tournament. Her presence on the court is commanding, but it is her leadership off the court that truly sets her apart.

Avery is described by her coaches as the heart and soul of the program—uplifting, inclusive, and relentlessly positive. She supports every athlete in the program regardless of skill level, always ensuring that her teammates feel valued and connected. Whether she’s leading warmups, celebrating a teammate’s success, or offering encouragement during tough matches, Avery brings a contagious energy that inspires those around her to be better athletes and better people.

Her commitment to athletics extends beyond volleyball. Avery also participates in Curtis’s women’s flag football program and is actively involved in school activities, demonstrating the same effort and passion across everything she does. Her dedication to the Curtis community, willingness to serve others, and ability to lead with grace and enthusiasm have left a lasting mark on her school.

Avery’s impact is immeasurable. She has helped shape a program, uplifted teammates, inspired younger athletes, and contributed to one of Curtis High School’s most successful volleyball seasons in history. As her coach reflects, “She is someone who will be extremely missed in our program next year—but her legacy will continue to influence those who follow in her footsteps.”

The Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission is honored to award Avery Cukjati the 2025 Sis Names Award, recognizing her commitment to excellence, her unwavering positivity, and her remarkable contributions to girls’ athletics at Curtis High School and the greater Pierce County community.
