At Sumner high school they say that Josh Riley is “the heart and soul” of their Track & Field program , and they call that ”an understatement.” The most decorated track athlete in Sumner high history also is outstanding on the football field. Sumner’s Athletic Director, Jeff Baines, says it best. “His impact on the athletic program is felt day in and day out. He can change the entire outcome of a contest through his performance.” You might call him Inspirational in every way ,and he certainly deserves the Tom Names Male Inspirational Award and its $5,000 college scholar-ship. Listen to this: He competed in every event (running and field) during the 2016 season. Just think of that, he tried everything there was to participate in, and most athletes only try one or two! He earned trips to the state championships in Track & Field in all four years at Sumner. He was League, District and State Champion in the 300 Hurdles this year, winning at state in a time of 39.03. The team captain for the Spartans was honored as Track & Field’s Athlete of the Year in the 3A South Puget Sound League. In football he was first-team All-League, running back, was a TAC Choice as one of four Athletes of the Year, and earned recognition from the Pierce County chapter of the National Football Foundation as an All-Area linebacker. He made 74.5 tackles, six for a loss with two sacks. In 147 carries as a running back and team captain he gained 1062 yards, had 11 pass receptions and scored 10 touchdowns. He was nominated as Under Armor Player of the Week last fall. With a 3.8 GPA, Riley is planning to attend the University of Montana in the fall. If he figures on “trying everything” for the “Griz”, there is certainly plenty of room to roam in Big Sky Country.
