The 2020 Tom Names Male Inspirational Athlete is Mac Vukich. Mac, a senior at Curtis High School, has overcome many physical obstacles to play tennis. Suzanne Vick, Curtis High School Athletic Director, wrote, "As a senior Mac was the team captain and the team's most inspirational player. He was the best leader on my team, and he's never done anything that has made me doubt that. His compassion and empathy towards his teammates show no boundaries. Through all the hardships and adversity in his life, his persistence, enthusiasm to achieve his personal best, and hard work inspired everyone."
Mac was born with Bilateral Club Foot. By the age of 18, he had 17 surgeries and wore braces everywhere he goes so he can walk further than a few feet. People with his condition typically use wheelchairs from birth. Mac played tennis at the highest level on the Curtis team this year as a member of the number one doubles team. Every day, Mac decided to be the best of which he is capable, challenging the odds, and creating something extraordinary. He is an inspiration to the team and coach is genuinely remarkable.
His coach wrote, "Mac pushes people to do their best. His presence on the team shows people what can be accomplished when you commit yourself to be the best you are capable of achieving every day." Mac's competitiveness helped motivate his partner and team to be successful. Mac joy of competition, even with his limitations, is infectious. Beyond the classroom, Mac is taking private pilot lessons. He hopes to get his license to fly shortly.
It is with great honor that the TAC recognizes Mac Vukich as the 2020 Tom Names Male Inspirational Athlete from Tacoma and Pierce County.
