Daylight Savings 🍂 Hey everyone — don’t forget to “fall back” this autumn on November 2nd!When daylight saving time ends, we turn our clocks back one hour, moving from daylight time to standard time (i.e., “fall back”). That extra hour can feel like a bonus — more sleep! — but it also nudges sunrise and sunset times earlier in the day, which has ripple effects on routines, health, and even sports. Fun Facts About Fall Daylight Savings: In North America, major professional leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, etc.) typically avoid scheduling games exactly at the ambiguous “fall back” hour to avoid confusion about kickoff times, broadcasting, and logistics. New York City Marathon: It routinely falls on the same morning DST ends, giving runners that “extra hour” of sleep. Race guides and coverage explicitly remind runners to set clocks back |

Chinook Pass State HOF VideoMore than 40 years since its peak prowess, Chinook Pass remains in the discussion regarding the fastest thoroughbreds ever. In September 1982 at Longacres in Renton, Chinook Pass ran what still stands as the swiftest five furlongs ever run on dirt, 55 1/5 seconds. That same year, he also equaled three other track or course records, for five furlongs at Hollywood in 56 seconds in the Meteor Handicap on grass; 5 1/2 furlongs at Longacres in 1:02.40; and six furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:07.60 while winning the Palos Verde Handicap. The Enumclaw-raised horse won the 1983 Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion sprinter. Chinook Pass remains the only Washington-bred horse ever to win a national award. That’s why it was later named Washington’s Horse of the Century. Horse racing Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr., who rode Chinook Pass to seven stakes victories, once paid the gelding the highest praise: “Affirmed (1978 Triple Crown winner) was the best horse I ever rode, but Chinook Pass was the fastest.” Chinook Pass started 25 races, winning 16 and taking second four times. Chinook Pass retired after winning the Longacres Mile by six lengths in 1983. Chinook Pass was bred and owned by Ed Purvis’s Hi Yu Stables and was raised and trained at Dewaine Moore’s Rainer Stables. Bud Kiokstad was the lead trainer for all but the last five races, which were overseen by Laurie Anderson. |

2025 Washington Sports Hall of Fame PresentationMARK HENDRICKSON – BASEBALL/BASKETBALL Mark Hendrickson is one of only 13 athletes ever to play in both the NBA and Major League Baseball. He is the only one to do it in the past 40 years and the only one to play at least four seasons in each league. A 6-foot-9 forward on the basketball court and a left-handed pitcher in baseball, Hendrickson exhibited two-sport stardom back to his high school days when he led Mount Vernon to two state basketball championships (1991, 1992) and two state baseball championships (1990, 1992). He was a 13th-round baseball draft pick in 1992 but headed to Washington State University focused on basketball. He was a two-time, first-team all-Pac-10 selection. When he concluded his WSU basketball career in 1996, he was second for career rebounds (927) and third for points (1,496). He was the 31st overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played 114 NBA games with four teams. He had pitched eight games at WSU as a junior and MLB scouts kept drafting him. He signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, playing some minor league ball while still in the NBA. In 2002, he made his Major League debut. He was a full-time starting pitcher for three seasons with Toronto and Tampa Bay. He continued for 10 seasons in the majors, winning 58 games. He also hit the first home run by a pitcher in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays. Republished from the Washington State Hall of Fame CHRISTAL (MORRISON) ENGLE – VOLLEYBALL Christal Morrison is the only player in the storied history of the University of Washington volleyball program to be a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American selection (1st-team junior and senior seasons, 3rd-team as a sophomore and 2nd-team as a freshman). An outside hitter from Puyallup, Morrison was the first Husky to be named first-team All-Pac 10 all four years (2004-2007). She left UW as the Huskies career leader in kills (1,859, now second) and points (2,188.0 still first), third in aces (142), seventh in digs (1,154), and 10th in total blocks (294). As a sophomore in 2005, she led Washington to its first national title and was named the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player. Her efforts earned her recognition as the Seattle Post Intelligencer Sports Star of the Year. UW advanced to the national semifinals in three of her four seasons. After college, four seasons on the pro beach volleyball circuit took her around the world. Morrison was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2014. At Puyallup High School, she was named Washington’s Gatorade Player of the Year and played on the U.S. Junior National Team that won a silver medal at the 2002 NORCECA Junior Continental Championships. Republished from the Washington State Hall of Fame JOHN CLAYTON – MEDIA John Clayton re-defined how the media covers the NFL as the most connected reporter in the country. Clayton covered the Seattle Seahawks for the Tacoma News Tribune for over 10 years but developed national recognition when he became the lead NFL reporter at ESPN in 1995. His writing, TV and radio segments shared insider knowledge of the NFL and brought a generation of fans closer to the players and teams. From a career that began covering the Pittsburgh Steelers while he was in high school and college, Clayton earned so much respect around the league that, in 2007, he received the Bill Nunn Memorial Award and induction into media wing of the NFL Hall of Fame. In addition to his coverage for the Tacoma News Tribune, Clayton hosted “Sports Saturday” on Seattle’s KJR radio and later moved to ESPN 710 radio continuing his popular call-in show. After exiting ESPN in 2017, he was a sideline reporter for Seattle Seahawks games for five seasons. Upon his death in 2022, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell honored Clayton as a “wonderful person” who “earned my tremendous respect and admiration as a journalist. For five decades, he covered the league with endless energy and professionalism.” |

10th Anniversary of the U.S. Open at Chambers BayThe official celebration will be held Saturday, June 7, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the South Range at Chambers Bay. The special event conducted by Pierce County and Kemper Sports will honor the volunteers who helped to make the event in 2015 possible and let everyone enjoy the memories from 10 years ago with golf skills games and championship memorabilia. Attendees also can take a photo with the iconic U.S. Open Trophy. The event is free to the public, but everyone is asked to register beforehand. More information is available at www.chambersbaygolf.com After successfully gathering one aspect of the entire world together in an old gravel pit overlooking the Puget Sound, it’s warranted to look back 10 years later with a sense of satisfaction. John Ladenburg was the county executive for Pierce County when he envisioned what would become Chambers Bay, a championship layout where the golf universe gathered to enjoy the 2015 U.S. Open. When that glorious June week concluded in sunshine a decade ago, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth was crowned the national champion in front of a sold-out crowd that barely left any shirts in the merchandise tent and not even a hot dog in some of the concession stands. |

I am not only grateful for the generous scholarship, but everything your organization has done for Tacoma athletes over the years. Your acknowledgment of Tacoma athletes has such a positive impact on the Tacoma community and the lives of students. Running has been a huge part of my life for a long time and has played a significant role in shaping me to be the person that I am today. These last 4 years as a member of Bellarmine Cross Country have been very meaningful and have taught me so much about leadership, work ethic, resilience, and so much more. And while I’ve found some success, I’ve had my ups and downs and have made some mistakes along the way. I really appreciate that you have chosen me to receive this award. It says a lot that you support athletes, despite their mistakes or rough patches in their high school career. I like how you allow people to feel free to pursue their goals without fear of failure, and show them that their efforts can be recognized without perfection. I am so excited to be pursuing my athletic and academic goals at the University of Washington this fall. Thank you so much for supporting me in my future endeavors. While I am leaving for college this fall, I believe that I will always feel connected to the Tacoma athletic community. I hope that at some point I can return some of the generosity that your organization has shown me. Please know that I will continue to make the most of my opportunities and that your generous scholarship will go to good use. Sincerely, Ella Borsheim |

June 9th Lunch MeetingThe next TAC lunch meeting will be this Thursday, June 9th at Tower Lanes. The menu for the afternoon will be a BBQ. For the program portion of the meeting we will be reviewing the strategic consulting project that the UPS students did for the TAC. They did a great job with the project and summarizing their findings. It is now up to us to review and determine how we want to move forward with the information that they have provided. During the meeting we will be reviewing some of the key finings. For those that are interested in reviewing the whole case study, it is uploaded on the TAC website, click here to access a copy. I have also uploaded the video from when the students delivered their project to us. Passing of Richard Van Volkinburg - UPS Football Hall of Fame![]() The Logger great, Rich Van Volkinburg, passed away Friday, 8 April, at the age of 70. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, 23 April, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam. Rich told Chris that what he was dearly hoping for, was that there would be a •big• presence of the Green & Gold at his wake. All Loggers, if it is at all possible for you, to set a choker, and get to Hoquiam on 23 April, for Rich. At Aberdeen High School, Rich was an All-State defensive end in 1969. At UPS, he was an immediate impact player, and was ultimately a four-year letterman. In 1972 and 1973, Rich’s play at nose guard won him AP Little All-America honorable mention recognition, and he was also named Little All-Northwest 1st-team defensive interior lineman. In 1973, Rich’s teammates voted him team co-captain, and after the season elected him Most Inspirational. In addition, in the spring of 1974 he was selected as co-winner of the UPS Athletic Department’s 1973-’74 John Heinrick Award for Most Inspirational Varsity Athlete. In 1994, Rich was inducted to the Logger Hall of Fame (along with the legendary coach, and post-War player, Bob Ryan). He had a long career as a teacher and coach in the Aberdeen public schools, and many old colleagues and students have spoken movingly of how important he was in their lives, and what a loyal friend he was. Rich was a Green & Gold Logger to his depths. In our project here of nurturing and maintaining Logger community and traditions, he was enthusiastic, and greatly helpful, over many years. He enriched so many lives, and we are deeply grateful to him. ============================= • Richard K. President's Message - September 2021Welcome to the “new” Tacoma Athletic Commission year which starts in September and runs through next August. The main reason for this calendar year is to follow the school year with our key support of high school boy and girl student athletes in all the Pierce County high schools.
Karyn Siegrist, our new Executive Secretary/Director, is doing a great job and getting well versed in all the TAC activities. Karyn will be rolling out the new ClubRunner data base soon with roster information, committee activities, and other items regarding the TAC. When you see or talk to Karyn thank her for all her efforts on behalf of the TAC. Please check out the list of “standing committees” of the TAC and consider getting involved in one or more of the activities. You will find a list of the committees in this newsletter. Also, please share the invitation to join the TAC to friends, teammates, or competitors. You will find a summary of “what we do in the TAC” and a membership application also in this newsletter. To grow the TAC membership with active participation will benefit all of the sports activities we support. Thank you for being involved. See you at the next meeting at noon on October 14 at the Tower Lanes on 6th Avenue in Tacoma. -Jim Merritt |

President's Message - August 2021Greetings fellow TAC members and sports enthusiasts!
As the Summer is winding down the TAC Executive Committee and Committee Chairs are busy planning for the new TAC year starting in September. The Executive Committee met early in August to plan the calendar and review programs/events as well as committee needs. Please mark Thursday, September 9th, for the noon meeting at the Tower Lanes in Tacoma. As you know, the mask mandate and COVID 19 restrictions may impact our meetings and schedule so please monitor TAC communications for updates to our programs. Karyn Siegrist, our new Executive Director/Secretary is busy installing the ClubRunner program that will provide easy access for all members to the TAC Membership Roster, Newsletter, and Website as well as many more features. Karyn will be presenting learning segments during each of our meetings so that we all are well versed with the program. Stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you in September. -Jim Merritt |

President's Message - July 2021With the success of the newsletter this year during challenging times, it seems appropriate to continue the newsletter through the summer to communicate with members and share upcoming activities. The Executive Committee will have a meeting in August to plan the 2021-22 TAC year. If you have any suggestions please send to Karyn or me. Also, if you would like to get more involved in TAC activities on a committee or on the Executive Committee please let us know. Remember, it is all about many members doing a little bit to spread the load and make it fun for everyone. With the unknowns during the golf tournament planning phase, the annual TAC Summer Golf Tournament has been deferred to next year. If you would like to be a member of this committee please let us know. Karyn, our new Executive Director/Secretary, is off to a great start. Bill White really organized the background information well for Karyn. The main focus for Karyn during the summer is setting up the ClubRunner program to manage communications, website, and membership roster for the TAC. Also, we will be reviewing the by-laws for consideration of any modifications at a Fall meeting. Please check out the TV Tacoma schedule for the Athlete of the Year program highlighting the |
